Biden Doesn't Buy the Polls & Filibuster Fever

Episode Summary

The great filibuster debate continues in Congress, and the team is here to break down what Americans think about the Senate rule. Plus, Joe Biden is just the most recent President to say he doesn't trust polls. And, dino fans, our fun fact this week is just for you!

Episode Notes

The seemingly endless debate over whether to revise or end the filibuster took up much of the fall in the Senate, and despite all indications that there aren't enough votes to do anything about it, Democrats, in particular, are still talking change.

Recent polling suggests that this is a very partisan issue but is there something more in the data? We take a look -- especially as the Senate gears up for a new Supreme Court nominee -- something that is no longer so fraught thanks to the last reform of the filibuster.

Then, presidents and polls. When Biden was recently asked about his low numbers with moderates and independents, he said "I don't believe the polls." He's in good company. Nearly every one of his modern predecessors has said the same -- usually when their poll numbers are down -- but it belies a truth: Most presidents depend on polls.

Finally, have you ever wondered if scientists could ever clone a dinosaur? This week's fun fact looks at just that!

About Poll Hub

Each week, Poll Hub goes behind the science to explain how polling works, what polls really show, and what the numbers really mean. Poll Hub is produced by the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, home of America’s leading independent college public opinion poll, the Marist Poll.

Lee Miringoff (Director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion), Barbara Carvalho (Director of the Marist Poll), and Jay DeDapper (Director of Innovation at the Marist Poll) dig deep to give you a look at the inner workings of polls and what they tell us about our world, our country, and ourselves.
